About Middleport, New York

What we know as present day Middleport, began with a settlement in 1806 one mile south of today's business district. With the coming of "Clinton's Ditch," activity moved "canalside."

One of the original canal towns, Middleport grew to become completely self-sufficient and was incorporated in 1859. Sixteen industries flourished along Wildcat Creek (now Jeddo Creek) using its waterpower for the manufacture of products. By the late 1800's, activity on the Erie Canal and the New York Central Railroad established Middleport as a major trade center.

Folklore has it that the name "Middleport" was derived from the fact that Middleport was midway on the Erie Canal between Lockport and Newport (now Albion). Several homes are reported to have been "stations" on the underground railroad.

Middleport's diversity is reflected in the many established churches in and around the Village. Children receive a sound, challenging education in the Royalton-Hartland Central School system. Within a four-mile radius of Middleport are shopping centers, medical and health care facilities and recreational opportunities. Some area industries have local, national and international markets.
